Returns to Play Two Concerts with the HKPO
World renowned violinist Sarah Chang returns to perform with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO) conducted by Andreas Delfs in the popular Violin Concerto No.1 by Max Bruch. “Great Performers: Sarah Chang plays Bruch” will be held on 16 & 17 April (Friday & Saturday) at 8pm at the HK Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Sarah Chang’s Much Anticipated Return with the HKPO
One of most captivating and gifted violinists of any generation, Sarah Chang has allured the audience world-wide since her early childhood, having played with almost all the world-renowned orchestras and conductors. Chang has matured from a child prodigy into an artist whose musical insight, technical virtuosity, and emotional range continue to astonish. Appearing in many of the world’s music capitals, she has collaborated with major orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, London Symphony and NHK Symphony orchestras among others, and with such esteemed conductors as Rattle, Dudamel, Dutoit, Jansons, Masur, Mehta, Gergiev, Haitink, Levine, Maazel, Muti, Previn, Tilson Thomas and Zinman.
In her last performance with the HKPO back in May 2005, Sarah fascinated the audience with her sublime virtuosity and brilliant interpretation. Five years later, she returns to collaborate with the celebrated conductor Andrea Delfs and the HKPO in the ever-popular Bruch’s Violin Concert no.1, which is also one of the highlights in her most recent recording.
Andreas Delfs, Conductor
Garnering countless accolades for his electrifying podium presence all over the world, Andreas Delfs served for twelve years until last season as Music Director of Milwaukee Symphony, where he fashioned a model for the next-generation music directors in America. Since 2007, Andreas Delfs has been Principal Conductor of Honolulu Symphony. Delfs has held chief artistic positions with distinguished institutions such as St Paul Chamber Orchestra, Hannover Symphony and Opera, Bern Opera, and at an early age, the celebrated Orchestre Suisse des Jeunes. He has collaborated with many of the world’s most renowned artists, including Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Midori, Perlman, Pollini, Rostropovich and Renée Fleming. Delfs’ recordings include Beethoven Piano Concerti with London Symphony and John O’Conor, a collection of sacred songs with Renée Fleming. In 2005, Andreas led Milwaukee to become the first American orchestra to distribute live recordings online through iTunes.
Bruch Violin Concerto no.1
In the concert, Sarah will play the Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor by the German composer Max Bruch, who was also a young prodigy in music and was awarded the Frankfurt Mozart Foundation Prize for his first symphony and for a string quartet. The concerto was composed when Bruch was 26 and was completed in 1864. It was first performed in April 1866 with the composer himself conducting, but it was not an unqualified success. Bruch made a few major revisions and the piece gained tremendous success when it was premièred in 1868. In the concert, music by American composer John Adams, The Black Gondola and the eternal Symphony No.1 by Johannes Brahms will also be performed.
