The first Korean Day celebration will be held on Friday, 5 October, 2007 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza featuring a series of entertaining and cultural programmes.  Admission is free.

The government of the Republic Korea has proclaimed 5 October a worldwide Korean Day.  The purpose of this declaration is to let the more than 7 million overseas Koreans know that their motherland is reaching out to them, to reawaken their identity as Koreans and to reinforce their ties to, and pride in, Korea.

In Korea, diverse events have been organized to celebrate this day: a ceremony to launch Korean Day, a seminar to discuss policies pertaining to overseas Koreans, dedication of a popular TV program (Open Concert) to the celebration of Korean Day, an oratory contest for ethnic Koreans, a gathering of Koreans from around the world, a run-for-unification marathon, Korean Festival, and so forth.

In Hong Kong, colorful activities will be taken place.  Except the Korean Day celebration organized by the Korean Residents Association, a National Day celebration (3 October), an art exhibition (4-8 October), a Korean speech contest for foreigners, a Korean movie screening of “Beyond the Years” (6 October) and an oratory contest for students (9 October) are also scheduled.

Mr. Seok Tong-youn, Consul General of the Republic of Korea said that these national celebrations are great opportunities to promote cultural exchanges between Korea and Hong Kong.

Korean Day, the highlight of the Korean Week, will be kicked off with the opening ceremony at 7:00 pm.  Two special zones will be set up at the venue.  Visitors can share the fun with the fringe activities.
